Christmas ‘Fantle’ 2011 | Mixed-Media Decor

Welcome to Anna K. Originals! So glad that you took the time to click over and stop by for a visit.  I’m linking up with the Christmas Mantle Link Party hosted by the ever-creative Beth at Home Stories A-Z.  Thanks for hosting this fun link up, Beth!

Having said that, I'm sure some of you may be wondering why it says "Christmas Fantle" in my title instead of Christmas Mantle. Well, I don't have a fireplace, but I did manage to rescue a solid wood mantle piece from the side of the road some time ago and now we have a fake mantle ('fantle').  We had it hung in our dining area during a recent remodel.  Now on to the pictures!

Christmas "Fantle" 2011Did anyone else go into Pinterest overload with Christmas decorating ideas? Yeah, me too.  It is a total treasure trove of ideas, projects, and inspiration...but, eventually, I had to pull myself away and take a look at what I already had on hand.  And I'm digging what I came up with! I still look at it and see 16 different things I'd like to add or try, however, I have a family that likes to eat occasionally and other things that need our money more.

My oldest son said it looks like a cool forest. That made me smile because that's kinda what I was aiming for - a take on the Christmas scenes/villages that everyone loves so much, just with a mixed-media twist. Here is a quick run down of what went into the making of our Christmas Fantle~

  • Star (purchased a few years ago)
  • Cone Trees (Styrofoam/Paper covered in felt, old book pages, yarn, or paint)
  • Little bird houses ($1 at Michael's)
  • Yarn-wrapped foam balls (left over from our Christmas Tree)
  • Wooden "NOEL" ornament (purchased a few years ago)
  • White scarf ($5 from Big Lots)
  • Old books and other items to lift objects up (hidden under scarf)

The tree on the left (above) is covered with vintage dictionary pages and a sparkly, bright green ribbon.  I like the way the shiny ribbon and aged paper contrasts against one another.  The yarn-wrapped tree on the right was originally a Styrofoam cone that I cut into three sections, wrapped with green yarn, and stuck through with a bamboo skewer.  It's resting on a glass votive that I filled with neutral colored felt to give it the feeling of a pot.  I originally had the white scarf on a table in the living room, but the snow-like effect was soo cool that it was moved to the fantle.

Ribbon and felt leaf shapes cover the two cones in the background and are flanked by more yarn ornaments and another simple birdhouse.  I thought it was important to bring in simple elements to balance the colors and textures going on in the rest of the fantle.  The bluish-green tree that you see is one of my mixed-media creations.  I used layers of tissue and paint, with strips of sheet music for garland and a white gel pen for this unique tree. One of those paper mache cone forms from Michael's is the base.

Last, but certainly not least, is the message of NOEL.

Many thanks to all who stopped by and Merry Christmas!

Blessings,

Anna K.

My First Holiday Craft Show

My first Holiday Arts and Crafts show was in November.  After my first ever show this past May, I was ready to get my feet wet with the Christmas scene.

The venue was indoors this time around, so I didn’t have to worry about a tent…or bad weather.  A definite plus!  I’m still playing around with how I arrange my booth space.  Visually, I like this set up but I found that some people are more hesitant to come in and shop as opposed to a set up closer to the front of the space.

I loved how many people were curious about mixed-media, what I draw inspiration from and even what my favorite materials are to work with.  A few people really connected with some of the pieces…that’s so very cool for me.

All in all, for me, it was a success.  I sold some of my pieces, I made connections with other artisans and shop owners and learned a few lessons.

I’m hopeful that in the coming year, I’ll be able to take part in more shows…maybe even get a few items in a shop!

I’m hopeful…

My first holiday craft show: The Preparations

This Saturday I will be taking part in my first holiday craft show.  This is my second show in general.  I’m nervous but excited.  I’m never quite sure how my art will be received or if I’ll actually sell any of my pieces…that being said, I’m looking forward to it!

But before I get to the business of selling my creations there’s a lot of prep work to be done.

For me that starts with lists.  One of my favorite things to do, y’all!  I tend to work better if my thoughts are on paper.

I put the final touches on any paintings or any other creations that I want to sell.  Pricing and taking inventory of everything comes next.  If you’re wondering, my inventory is on the small side.  I’m a one-woman operation and, for right now, I don’t spend hours a day in my little studio painting away.  I have two children and a Hubs who is recovering from surgeries to both arms.  The fam always comes first with me.

I like to do a dry run on my display set up.  The last show we did, it was an outdoor event and we were required to have a tent.  We set everything up in the front yard the week before the event just to make sure everything worked together.  Honey, the neighbors thought that a show from HGTV was getting ready to film.  I got the biggest laugh out of that when they asked!  I was so focused on the display that I never realized how a big white canopy tent in the yard would look like!  This show will be indoors so the tent will stay home…Yay!

Packing is also a biggie.  Making sure everything is gathered, packed and loaded is a big deal.  I try to make sure I have everything I need so that I don’t have any emergencies the day of an event.  A little toolbox full of small tools and other items I need for my display comes in very handy.

What you see up there has been one of the fun parts of my prep work the last few weeks ~ my business card.  With Vistaprint I was able to upload some of my own images and, thanks to a tricked out discount offer, get a batch made before this show.  I also had a small banner made in the same design.  They both came out wonderfully!  I love that I was able to include my own elements for a truly customized look.

All in all, I’m looking forward to the new experience of a holiday show.  Now I’m off to get more stuff checked off my list!

Thanks so much for stopping by,
